If you have Medicare and would like to avoid out-of-pocket expenses, such as copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles, which can easily add up, a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policy might be right for you.

Here's how a Medigap policy works...Medicare will pay its share of the Medicare-approved amount for covered healthcare costs, then your Medigap policy will pay its share. The amount you owe on that specific healthcare invoice will be reduced or eliminated completely. There are some items, such as long-term care, that are not covered by Medigap. Make sure you fully investigate or speak to your agent about what is and is not covered.

A Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C), is available through private insurance companies that are approved by Medicare. When you purchase a Medicare Advantage Plan you still have Medicare. For example, a Medicare Advantage Plan includes Medicare Part A (hospital coverage), Part B (medical coverage), and sometimes Part D (prescription drug coverage).

Prescription Drug Coverage

Prescription drug expenses can be a significant problem for seniors. Even if you are not taking prescription medication now, you may want to consider enrolling in Medicare's optional prescription drug coverage (Part D). Here's why...if you decide not to get Medicare prescription drug coverage when you are first eligible and then choose to join later, you will be charged a penalty for every month you waited. You will have to keep paying the penalty for as long as you have Medicare prescription drug coverage. There are some exceptions to this on Medicare.gov such as having other creditable prescription drug coverage (from an employer or union, for example) or qualifying for Extra Help (if you meet certain income and resource limits). Make sure you research this or talk to an expert.

For those who are taking prescription drugs, there are drug formularies for you to see if your specific medication is covered. If the drug is not in the formulary, there are options you can pursue. There is a 7 month period during which you can join a plan when you first becoming eligible for Medicare:

3 months prior to your birth month
your birth month
3 months after your birth month

October 15 - December 7

You can join, switch, or drop a plan during the Annual Enrollment Period. If you switch plans, the new coverage will begin on January 1.
